In 1928 London Property Suffered from Major Flooding
This caused thousands of people to become homes and even resulted in tragic death of 14 people. A stretch of the embankment in the Chelsea area gave way. Snow fall further up stream had been heavy over the Winter period, the snow melted on NYE, plus at the same time there was heavy rainfall. The incoming high tide in the lower Thames was made worse by a cyclone in the North Sea, causing a storm surge, with water levels 1.5m above normal level.
All of these factors made worse by dredging of the Thames allowed record levels of water to breach; floods were reported between the Greenwich, up to and as far as Hammersmith embankment. The highest measurements were 5.5m above the datum line.
