Home Improvement Preparing for wet weather

Check your property's gutters, over the year moss may have grow in or around your drainage system. Gutters can fill up with foliage, debris from trees, pine needles, leaves, and other matter. Down pipes can fill up with this  type of spoil. to protect the integrity of the guttering, place a fine grill or mesh, cut to size over the down pipe, or cover the entire gutter.

Rods can be used to help clear and debris that has backed-up in and of the drain pipes. Alternatively roll your sleeves up and get your hands dirty, grab as much of what might be sludge out of the pipe. If you have a jet-wash the sudden pressure could help dislodge the blockage and flush out the system.

Veluxe windows have a trough around their sides designed to let water flow around the window, if these fill with moss or debris, in a heavy downpour water might make it's way into the roof and your property. Check the surrounds of any veluxe windows are clear and free of blockages.

Drains may back-up overtime and become blocked, using off the shelf products designed to break down the blockage in 30 + min and the flush the system. Alternatively if this isn't working, heavy duty rods and a jet wash can break-up and free the blockage. Commercial companies are available to help in emergency situations.

Always consult a qualified professional before making major changes to your property as drainage is rife with pitfalls.
