Who was Saint George?
George of Lydda became Saint George; born in 275AD Cappadocia part of the Greek empire and then Roman Empire and now park of modern Turkey. His family were Christian nobles, and like his father he served in the Roman army.During the last Roman persecution of Christian, the Diocletianic persecution, George of Lydd refused to renounce his religion and with his father was martyred by the Roman Emperor Diocletian.
Was there a dragon?
The story of the dragon appears a thousand years later, telling of George travelling to the city of Silene in Libya. Here he slayed the beast before it could feast on the kings daughter given as a sacrifice.
