Gas Boiler or Heat Pump

Published: 14/12/2025

What is the best way to heat your home? This is a tricky one, and it all depends on, several factors.

  • How much money you have for the outlay?
  • What are the future costs?
  • How well is your home insulated?
  • What is the structure of your property?
The cheaper option is the gas boiler, the boiler it's self will just up to £2,500 whilst a heat pump will cost £4,000 plus, not to mention all the add-ons. There are grants to help save on the initial outlay but generally speaking the heat pump is a bigger up front cost.

This recently more traditional method is evolving as we speak. The UK is under going a nationwide gas supply infrastructure upgrade. The gas mix is moving from natural gas, methane to hydrogen or bio-methane, as these are low carbon alternatives. The average house gas bill is approx (as of 2024) £60 per month.

Heat Pump

An air source heat pump works like a reverse fridge, drawing in cold air and converting it into warm air then pushing it through your property. The current heat pumps have a life expectancy of ten to fifteen years, this is something to bear in mind especially at their current prices. The running cost is the electricity bill which is on average £1000 per year.

The technology is changing, improving and adapting to the needs of society. Right now it's close but unless you insulate your property well, however you heat it, you will be throwing money away
